Day 16 Dingboche to Thukla – Everest Base Camp

So day 16 of our attempt at the Everest Base Camp trek and hopefully they get a bit more positive after this one. After having a raging fever all night I woke up completely wrecked. I haven’t had a fever like that since Covid. I woke up dehydrated, sleep deprived, dizzy and weak facing a short 3 miles hike. I did everything I could to get ready for our leaving time. Downing electrolytes and paracetamol but 8:30 came around and I looked at the hill just out of Dingboche and I just knew I didn’t have the strength. After a chat with Sonam we decided to delay our departure as the hike was so short and had so little incline today. He gave me a deadline and said if I couldn’t do it by 11 then he’d have to bench me for the day. My SATs were still good so I drank a load more then went to bed for an hour. At 10:30 I woke up and decided the hill would be the test. If I could drag my sorry carcass over the hill the rest of the hike is quite flat I’m sure I could make it. If I couldn’t I’d bench myself which would mean we wouldn’t be able to complete the circuit. Well anyway I managed to get over the hill. It wasn’t easy as I felt so weak and I had to make lots of stops but we made good time and we still managed to complete our hike to Thukla in under three hours. I started to feel a bit better as we went along and as we arrived at lunch time, I ate a quick lunch then went to bed for a few hours. The sickness tanked my sats (from 85 in the morning to 71 in the evening) a bit in the evening and I started showing signs of altitude sickness. Weird cramps, pressure in my head but overall by the time I woke I was feeling a lot better. Hopefully things are on the up from here. We just need to push for 9 more kilometres. Thanks for the support again guys 🙂
