Day 12 Everest Basecamp Trek Acclimatization Day

Day 12 of our attempt to hike the EBC. We stayed in the famous Namche Bazaar last night and today it was an acclimatization day. Which means that we go to hike at a higher altitude and then come back down to encourage our bodies to adapt to the height. Today we hiked out to the Everest View about 600 metres higher than where we are now and approximately the height of our next stop. It was a hard slog up quite large steps zig zagging up the mountain. I had unfortunately felt ill in the night so the first few hours didn’t feel so good but I felt better as we went along. On the way up we stopped at the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee an organisation focused in removing rubbish from the national park through various methods included asking visitors to collect a kilo of rubbish and bring it back to Lukla. They also have a great art installation of trying to upcycle the rubbish into art. It was very interesting and as bottle tops can’t be recycled they have reformed them into 3d ornaments of Everest for guests. A really interesting project. We continued on and eventually got up to the Everest View, sadly she was hiding her face in the clouds today but the weather was amazing and the views were fantastic. Overall we hiked over 5.8kms and back arriving back at the Khumbu lodge for about 13:30. We then explored the market a little. It had so many amazing crafts that sadly we don’t want to have to carry up the mountain so we left empty handed. On the way down we will do our souvenir shopping. It was really great to hike today with not only our guide Sonam who is so knowledgeable and considerate but also our porter Karma who is only 18. We usually don’t get to see him as he picks up our bags in the morning then runs up ahead of us with all 40 kilos of them strapped to his back. We are so grateful for his efforts. It was nice to spend some time with the whole team today. Mum and my sats are down to 89 and 85 respectively and apart from a little pressure in our heads we are still feeling good. Tomorrow’s a big day as we hike 10km to Tengboche. Bye for now! #namche #hiking #trekking #nepaltrekking
